FL
Crane Perpetual Trophy
The trophy was donated by Mr F
L Crane, a well known polo player and breeder of thoroughbreds
from Jerry's Plain NSW in the Hunter Valley. His aim in
presenting the trophy was to encourage the breeding of a better
saddle horse and to give a prize to the best mare on the
showground at Sydney Royal.
The FL Crane Perpetual Trophy
itself is a Hecworth silver plated wine cooler of campana form
with a gadrooned rim and foliate cast handles, fitted with a
clear glass liner, and height of 24cm.
Originally it was presented to
the best mare or filly over 14.2hh and not exceeding 15.2hh and
was first contested in 1952. This height restriction was varied
for a short period from 1966 to 1976. The present description
of the class is for the best mare or filly over 14.2hh and not
exceeding 15.2hh, showing a percentage of thoroughbred qualities
and, in the opinion of the Judge, being suitable for the
breeding of hacks.
